It serves as a binder for refractory coatings, ultra-pure alumina products, and refractory concrete materials. As a multivalent, polyhydroxy electrolyte, it can be considered an intermediate in the hydrolysis of AlCl₃ to Al(OH)₃. Its colloidal nucleus carries a positive charge, and the hydrolysis products are acidic.
