Sodium Acetate CAS#127-09-3
Sodium acetate (CH₃COONa), the sodium salt derived from acetic acid, occurs as a colorless crystalline solid with deliquescent properties. This multi-purpose chemical enjoys extensive adoption in industrial, laboratory and commercial fields.
Within the textile sector, sodium acetate neutralizes waste effluents containing sulfuric acid, and may function as a photoresist alongside aniline dyes. In construction, it acts as a concrete sealing agent to alleviate water-caused degradation. For food production, it is frequently incorporated as a flavoring additive.
It also works as a prevalent buffering reagent for laboratory experiments. Thanks to its thermal storage characteristics, sodium acetate constitutes a key ingredient in heating pads, hand warmers and hot ice products.
On a lab scale, sodium acetate can be synthesized by letting acetic acid react with sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide. For mass industrial production, it is generally obtained from the reaction between glacial acetic acid and sodium hydroxide.

Product Application of Sodium Acetate CAS#127-09-3
Sodium acetate is extensively applied as a dyeing mordant. It also sees use in photography, food additive formulation, glucose refining, meat preservation, leather tanning, and as a dehydrating agent. Within analytical chemistry, it is routinely employed for preparing buffer solutions.
In the food sector, sodium acetate functions as a preservative for processed meat items. It is often blended with other acidic preservatives including lactates and propionates to boost preservative efficacy, with a typical dosage between 0.2% and 0.5%. Moreover, sodium acetate is a common ingredient in salad dressings and convenience ready-to-eat foods.
