Oxalic acid CAS# 144-62-7

Oxalic acid is a strong acid with high reactivity, 10,000 times stronger than acetic acid.

It forms soluble complexes with various metals, enhancing its utility in chemical processes.

Oxalic acid’s hygroscopic nature and solubility in ethanol and water make it versatile in industrial applications.

It serves as an effective reducing agent, easily oxidized to CO₂ and water, useful in volumetric analysis and synthesis.

Oxalic acid, the simplest dicarboxylic acid, is a colorless crystal that contains two molecules of crystal water at room temperature. It becomes anhydrous when heated to 100.1°C. Toxic and hygroscopic, it dissolves easily in ethanol and water but is insoluble in benzene and chloroform. Oxalic acid forms complexes with metals and has a high acidity, over 10,000 times stronger than acetic acid. It is a strong reducing agent, easily oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. It can be oxidized by potassium permanganate, turning the solution colorless. Decomposing at 189.5°C or in concentrated sulfuric acid, it produces carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water. Oxalic acid is also used in generating carbon monoxide gas in labs. It’s found in small amounts in human urine, with calcium oxalate being a major component of urinary stones.
