Products Description of Neodymium Nitrate Hexahydrate CAS#16454-60-7

Neodymium nitrate hexahydrate carries the chemical formula Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and has a molecular weight of 438.35. It presents two crystalline polymorphs, α and β, with a phase transition temperature around 22°C. This compound dissolves readily in water and ethanol. Vacuum dehydration converts it into its anhydrous form, whereas intense heating triggers decomposition. It also easily combines with other nitrates to generate a range of complex salts, including 3Mg(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O, 3Mn(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O and 3Ni(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O.

Neodymium nitrate solution is an acidic aqueous liquid with a purplish-red colour. Owing to its high acidity, it reacts vigorously with carbonate substances and may accelerate corrosion of refractory materials. For this reason, direct dosing into raw batch mixes is not recommended; it is generally pre-blended with sodium carbonate prior to application.

When used as a glass colorant, neodymium nitrate solution imposes no special melting requirements on glass manufacturing processes. As the dosage rises, the glass colour gradually shifts from pale blue to blue‑purple under fluorescent lighting, and exhibits a blue‑purple red shade, commonly referred to as rose red, under natural sunlight. A tiny dosage of selenium powder can intensify the red tone and preserve the appealing purplish‑red hue of neodymium glass particularly at night. Moreover, it cuts the consumption of Nd₂O₃ and reduces overall glass production expenses. Research confirms that neodymium nitrate solution pre-mixed with soda ash serves as a technically viable and cost-effective feedstock for glass tinting.
