Products Description of Titanium Tetrachloride CAS#7550-45-0

Titanium tetrachloride is the most commercially important titanium halide and a vital feedstock for manufacturing titanium sponge and chloride-process titanium dioxide. The purified product is a colourless, transparent, high-density, non-conductive liquid with the chemical formula TiCl₄ and a relative density of 1.726. Its melting point is -25°C and boiling point stands at 136.4°C.

Titanium tetrachloride carries a sharp, pungent acidic odour and is prone to rapid hydrolysis. It generates white fumes upon contact with moist air. It decomposes when reacting with water, dissolves in alcohols and concentrated hydrochloric acid, and is fully miscible with chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.

It can be manufactured by blending titanium dioxide, carbon powder and maltose to form a compact blend. The mixture then undergoes coking before chlorination with chlorine gas at temperatures exceeding 600°C. Alternative production routes employ chlorinating agents including carbon tetrachloride.
