Toluene 2,6-diisocyanate (CAS No. 91-08-7) is an aromatic organic substance within the isocyanate family. Its molecular formula is C₉H₆N₂O₂, with a molecular weight of 174.16. Under ambient conditions, it exists as a clear liquid from colorless to light yellow. Its density is 1.225 g/mL at 25°C, the boiling point ranges from 129 to 133°C under 18 mmHg, the flash point exceeds 230°F (roughly 127°C), and its vapor pressure reaches 2 Pa at 20°C.
This product dissolves in benzene and acetone. Toluene 2,6-diisocyanate undergoes vigorous reaction with water and tends to polymerize quickly when exposed to alkalis. It is flammable and cannot be mixed with powerful oxidants. Primarily, it functions as a monomer to produce flexible polyurethane foams, coatings and elastomers.
