Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is a high‑strength oxidizing substance. It presents as dark purple crystals with a distinctive bluish metallic lustre. Its melting point is 240°C and the density is 2.7 g/cm³. This compound carries no odour, yet it can trigger explosions upon contact with particular organic materials or easily oxidizable substances.
Potassium permanganate dissolves in water and alkaline solutions, while only showing slight solubility in methanol, acetone and sulfuric acid. Thanks to its vigorous oxidation capacity, it is extensively applied as an oxidant in chemical manufacturing and associated industrial operations.

Potassium permanganate functions as a widely adopted oxidant in chemical manufacturing, supporting the synthesis of saccharin, vitamin C, isoniazid and benzoic acid. Within the pharmaceutical sector, it can act as a preservative, sanitizer, deodorant and antidote.
For water purification and sewage treatment, potassium permanganate works as a water treatment reagent to oxidize hydrogen sulfide, phenols, iron, manganese and a broad range of organic and inorganic contaminants. It is also capable of odour suppression and decolorization. In gas purification workflows, it eliminates trace sulfur, arsenic, phosphorus, silanes, boranes and sulfide impurities.
In mining and metallurgical operations, it facilitates the separation of molybdenum from copper, purifies zinc and cadmium products, and acts as an oxidizer for combined flotation procedures. Other applications cover bleaching of special textiles, waxes, oils and resins, adsorption media in gas respirators, and colourants for timber and copper materials.
Food‑grade potassium permanganate can be deployed as a bleaching agent, disinfectant, odour remover, water purifier and refining additive for beverage‑grade carbon dioxide. Benefiting from its powerful oxidation, deodorization and sterilization capabilities, it is also utilized in pharmaceutical production for preservation, disinfection, odour removal and detoxification purposes.
